Anne L. Henley, VSLD, CBLP, MLA
Born into a family of gardeners from Charleston, SC and Atlanta, GA, Anne Henley grew up in Birmingham, Alabama; Casper, Wyoming; and various parts of central Virginia, before establishing her design practice in Charlottesville in 1996.
Anne holds a Bachelor's degree in art history and history from Mary Baldwin College and a Master's degree in landscape architecture from the University of Georgia, where she completed a Master's thesis on outdoor theatre as an expression of a local southeastern woodland.
Anne's experience includes two years of professional landscape installation and maintenance for residential and commercial properties; five years as a landscape designer for a successful retail nursery; and over thirty years of nurturing her own gardens--both naturalistic and formal.
Anne's qualifications have been further enhanced by her travels to many renowned public landscapes and beloved private gardens throughout the U.S. and abroad. Through her passion for plants; her artist’s eye for beauties inherent in the direct experience of nature; and her life-long familiarity with classical gardens, Anne has developed a unique perspective on integrating traditional design motifs within our evolving natural and cultural history--forging refreshed models for harmonizing the natural world and the built environment.
Anne has written a number of provocative articles and essays on various aspects of landscape design. She is a certified member of the Virginia Society of Landscape Designers (VSLD); a certified level one Chesapeake Bay Landscape Professional (CBLP); and a member of the Piedmont Landscape Association and the Virginia Native Plant Society (VNPS).
